An embassy is technically foreign territory
An embassy building itself is generally considered the sovereign territory of the country it represents, which means access, security, and filming permission run through that country’s own protocols, not DC’s usual venue rules. The State Department’s Office of Protocol is a useful general reference for how diplomatic access and etiquette actually work in Washington. Every embassy handles this differently, so there’s no single set of rules to learn once and reuse everywhere on Embassy Row.
High-profile speakers need different prep than a typical interview
Ambassadors and diplomatic officials are almost always experienced, comfortable speakers, which sounds like an easy interview and can actually be the opposite challenge. Practiced speakers can talk at length without ever quite landing on the specific soundbite you need. Tight, specific questions and prompts worked out in advance matter more here than with a less experienced interview subject.
Diplomatic events filming means timelines are tighter than they look
Diplomatic schedules move on their own logic, and a high-profile figure’s availability window is often much shorter than a typical corporate interview slot. Our own experience with this involved a two hour window across three locations for the Croatia announcement, with no real margin for delay if anything went sideways.

Start protocol conversations with the embassy or the relevant government office well in advance, plan your questions to get specific answers from a naturally talkative speaker, and build your schedule assuming less flexibility than a typical corporate shoot, not more.
