Old Town Alexandria doesn’t look like the rest of DC on camera, cobblestone streets, historic rowhouses, a working waterfront on the Potomac, and that’s exactly why it keeps showing up as a filming location for us. Here’s what we’ve actually learned shooting there.

Why Old Town Alexandria reads differently on camera than DC proper
Most DC filming locations lean federal, marble, columns, monuments. Old Town is a working historic neighborhood instead, brick sidewalks, small storefronts, a waterfront with real boat traffic. For a story that needs warmth or a sense of place rather than institutional weight, that difference matters. We used exactly this setting for a Croatian ambassador’s FIFA World Cup announcement, since the neighborhood itself was part of the story, not just a backdrop.
Multiple locations in a tight window
Old Town’s compact, walkable layout is genuinely useful for a multi-location shoot on a tight schedule, several distinct backdrops sit within a short walk or a quick drive of each other. That same compactness cuts both ways, though, since narrow historic streets mean limited parking and tighter logistics for moving gear between spots than a shoot with more spread-out locations would need.
Foot traffic and King Street
King Street, Old Town’s main corridor, is genuinely busy most of the year, tourists, shoppers, and locals all sharing narrow sidewalks. Early morning is the most reliable window for a clean shot without needing to manage a crowd in the background, similar to shooting on the National Mall. Weekday mornings specifically tend to be quieter than weekends, when the waterfront and King Street both see significantly more foot traffic.
Permits and permission on private historic property
Unlike the National Mall, most of Old Town is privately owned historic property, storefronts, restaurants, and residences, which means permission works differently from site to site rather than through one federal process. Confirm access directly with individual property or business owners well in advance, and check with the City of Alexandria on any permit requirements for filming on public sidewalks or in public spaces specifically.
What we’d tell you before booking a shoot in Old Town
Plan your locations within walking distance of each other to make the most of the neighborhood’s compact layout, but budget real time for moving gear through narrow streets with limited parking. Shoot early on a weekday if a clean shot without crowds matters. And confirm access with property owners and the city separately, since Old Town doesn’t have a single point of permission the way federal land does.
